CHANG LEK was born in the Buddhist year 2524 (1981) in a small, poverty-stricken Akha village near Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand. At ther age of five, his father begged and scraped together enough money to enter him into Wat sa Kaow, a Buddhist temple school in southern Thailand, where he remained for eleven years. When his father died, he returned to the village but soon migrated to Chiang Mai to earn whatever money he could to send back to his mother and younger brother. In 2004, he met the artist Galen Garwood and began an apprenticeship in Garwood's studio. Although he has had no formal art training, he rapidly entered into the un-chartered waters of the Creative Spirit and through pure intuition and the absolute joy of art-making, Chang Lek has, at the young age of 26, already produced astonishingly beautiful and provocative visuals gifts.
